There are fascinating wonders around the world and a few are astonishing as well as strange things which amaze every individual. The desert kites are the strange lines which are seen by the people in the deserts of Israel, Jordan as well as in Egypt. The kites are noticed in 1920’s by the pilots of the Royal Air Force. People couldn’t understand the lines from the air and the outlines are seen which form different figures.
Now Google Earth offers the opportunity to study “desert kites”, large, presumably Neolithic gazelle-hunting structure, shaped like children’s kites. They occur throughout the Near East where large stones were available, e.g. in the Harrat (lava deserts).
Kites typically consist of km-long guiding walls, ending in a ha-sized enclosure. In Jordan at least 550 kites are counted, and another 252 in Saudi Arabia. The Jordanian and the 45 northern SA kites are of a different type (“star-shaped” and arranged in chains) than the 207 in the Harrat Khaybar in Central SA (“barbed” and individual).
Though the people since thousand of year are aware of the lines and the lines remind the air borne kites. The kites are very unique figures with a unique thickness and are of different height.
David Kennedy, a professor of classics and ancient history at the University of Western Australia, suggests these depictions stand as an evidence and behave as a game trap through which trapping or capturing the wild animals becomes easy. The kites are different shaped structures and the archeologists even proved that these are used to hunt the animals and even killed.
Previously people failed to identify these figures, but later these are recognized as the Works of the Old Men and these are the figures made by the local Bedouin. There are various kites which are seen around the region and are recognized in Arabia and Sinai Peninsula.
Not just these two places, but one can find these in the south eastern Turkey and are the ancient structures that are even seen most of the parts of America. The excavations proved a lot regarding the desert kites and people can know much regarding the mysterious desert lines.
The funnel shaped figures draw the attention of people and are commonly built in the local field and normal places and on the stones. The stone walls are built in 4000 BCE to 2000 BCE and are dated as 8000 BCE.
Researchers suggest the natural environment helped for hunting and the desert kites are narrow and some kites are used as pits to trap the animals. The figures are constructed in order to hunt the wild animals and are the narrow lines that are constructed to prevent the animals to gain speed and run away from the pit. The narrow and the funnel shaped pit prevents animals to escape from the pit and even look like a small cell.
In the process of hunting, the hunters used the cells to trap the animals and even are constructed to trap the animals till they slaughter the wild animals. Also, the animals are caught here to get migrated and the animals are transported during the 19th and the early 20th centuries. This even stands as a protected area as the pit is safe and acts as a cell that houses the animals safely. The large stone walls are seen around the desert in the Jordanian Harran along with various other places that and clearly stand as an evidence that demonstrates the way of trapping the prey.
Giant stone structures are often found associated with the wheels. Sometimes they circle the perimeter of the wheel, other times they are in among the spokes. In Saudi Arabia some of the cairns look, from the air, like they are associated with ancient burials.
Some study suggests these bizarre lines are the Middle East’s own version of the Nazca Lines — ancient “geoglyphs”.
Scientists believe two wheel-shaped patterns spotted at Wadi Wisad, in the Black Desert of Jordan, may have been crafted 8,500 years ago.
This could make them a staggering 6,000 years older than the Nazca lines. Is it possible they have been constructed and used for some purposes by advanced ancient civilization?
Amelia Sparavigna, a physics professor at Politecnico di Torino in Italy, told Live Science in an email that she agrees these structures can be referred to as geoglyphs in the same way as the Nazca Lines are. “If we define a ‘geoglyph’ as a wide sign on the ground of artificial origin, the stone circles are geoglyphs,” Sparavignawrote in her email.
The function of the wheels may also have been similar to the enigmatic drawings in the Nazca desert.
“If we consider, more generally, the stone circles as worship places of ancestors, or places for rituals connected with astronomical events or with seasons, they could have the same function of [the] geoglyphs of South America, the Nazca Lines for instance. The design is different, but the function could be the same,” she wrote in her email.
For now the meaning of the wheels and their real purpose remains a mystery.
