The world is full of unsolved mysteries, some that invoke the supernatural.
There are a lot of stories of alleged encounters with bizarre creatures of unknown origin, that lurk out there in the dark, that haunt the isolated forests, that hide in the icy depths of the deepest lakes. They appear unexpectedly and inexplicably, then vanish just as mysteriously, usually leaving witnesses dumbfounded, frightened and, unfortunately in most cases, without a shred of evidence. Yet the eyewitness stories of these creatures persist, haunting the darkness as well as our imaginations.
Here is the list top 10 most mysterious creatures and monsters that continue to elude scientists.
1 – Bigfoot / Sasquatch / Yeti
This creature falls under the category of the hairy ape-men. They have many names like Bigfoot, Sasquatch, Yeti, Yowie or Skunk Ape. They are believed to exist in the abandoned woodlands and mountains. They are said to be tall (almost seven to eight feet in height), covered with long brown or auburn color hair (white in case of Yeti), a strong pungent odor and large feet.
The Bigfoot Field Researchers Organization are venturing deeper into the wilderness. They are planning to place motion-triggered digital webcams in different spots of the forest to locate the hairy beast. With such 24-hour surveillance and many eye-witnesses, the day is not too far when we will collect adequate evidence. (read more)
2 – Loch Ness Monster
The Loch Ness Monster is a giant creature with a long neck, a horse-like head, and a humped back. The Loch Ness Monster, also known as the Nessie, is believed to live in the deep cold lakes.
Many expeditions with sophisticated electronic equipment are carried out to locate the monster but in vain. Witnesses have reported instant sightings of the beast. Witnesses have said of humps protruding from the water while some claim of seeing the creatures’ neck.
Besides the Nessie, there are other deep, cold lakes around the world like the Chessie in the Chesapeake Bay, Storsie in Sweden’s Lake Storsjön, Selma in Norway’s Lake Seljordsvatnet and “Champ” in New York’s Lake Champlain. Researchers are of the opinion that the creature could be a plesiosaur, an animal from the dinosaur era which has become extinct more than 66 million years ago.
3 – Chupacabra
Sightings of El Chupacabra or the goat sucker dates back to the 1970s and 1990s. The creature gained fame in 1995 with reports from Puerto Rico on the Internet. According to the reports, the strange creature killed farmers’ livestock like ducks, chicken, rabbits, and goats. The farmers claimed that the killing method of this unknown beast was different than the wild dogs and other predators.
The farmers described the creature to be of the size of a chimpanzee, hopping style of that of a kangaroo and had large glowing red eyes, gray skin and skinny arms and a long snake-like tongue with sharp fangs. Some said that it had quills along its spine that opened and closed like a fan while others believed it to have wings.
By the end of the 90s, the sightings of this creature began to spread. People in Mexico, southern Texas and several American countries claim to have seen this beast. Even newspapers reported of some incidents in Chile.
4 – The Jersey Devil
The Jersey Devil is a terrifying creature that haunts the dense pine barrens of New Jersey. Witnesses claim that it adorns a frightening appearance which earned it the name, the Jersey Devil. The creature is said to be about three and a half feet high, a head like a collie dog and a face like a horse. It has a long neck and wings which are about two feet long. The back legs are like those of a crane and have horse’s hooves. The monster walks on its back legs and has two short front legs with paws.
The legacy of this beast dates back to mid-1700s, but multiple sightings began in early 1900s. The theories of the Jersey Devil are similar to Chupacabra. Although, it is not certain what this creature is definitely there seems to be something scary in the woods of New Jersey.
5 – Mothman
Since November 1966, a series of strange sightings took place in Point Pleasant, West Virginia. It was initially thought as alien or some poltergeist activity.
6 – Elves and Fairies
Fairies are said to be little ephemeral beings with wings who lived in forests while the elves and dwarfs were residents of the woods. There aren’t many people who take seriously the existence of elves and fairies in today’s society. Yet there are people who will swear on the heads of their grandchildren that they have seen them with their own eyes – just as plainly as others have seen ghosts, Bigfoot or the Loch Ness monster.
The researchers Richard Shaw and L.A. Marzulli travelled to Mexico. Here they met the most prominent Latin American UFO Researcher Mr. Jaime Maussan. It was him, who revealed to them a creature which looked like a fairy! The episode telecasted in Watchers 10 lays witness to the findings. They believe that this is going to alter the history forever. There have been put forward pictures and videos for the same, and for those of you who still believe it a hoax, need to see the videos yourself. (read more)
7 – The Dover Demon
A bizarre creature was seen in Dover, Massachusetts on April 21, 1977. However, this beast was seen only for a short period. It is the most mysterious creature of modern times. 17-year-old Bill Bartlett first saw the Dover Demon. Bill described the beast to be about four feet tall, with two legs, hairless body with a rough skin, long spindly peach colored limbs and a giant watermelon shaped head with glowing orange eyes. After Bill, another 15-year-old boy, John Baxter claimed to see the same creature. The final sighting was reported by another 15-year-old, Abby Brabham.
However, investigations did not reveal any substantial evidence, and skeptics suggest that the teenagers must have seen a young moose.
8 – The Loveland Lizard
Two policemen reported of having seen this creature. One police officer described the creature to be three to four feet tall, weighing around 50 to 75 pounds and having a leathery skin, short tail and a head and face like that of a frog or a lizard.
The second officer claims to have seen it in the middle of the road may be due to roadkill. Post this, a farmer witnessed the beast and reported that it resembled a frog. Now, the question that arises is that was it a frog or an amphibian. If it is an amphibian, it will be the largest one on records.
9 – Living Dinosaurs
While most of us are awestruck by movies like Jurassic Park, there are reports that for over 200 years, giant creatures like sauropods and Apatosaurus lived in remote rain forests of Africa and South America. The native tribes named them as Jago-nini or giant diver. In 1913, Captain Freiheer von Stein Zu Lausnitz, a German explorer was informed by the pygmies of a creature called as mokele-mbembe or the stopper of rivers.
The tribes described the creature to have a smooth brown, gray skin and a long flexible neck. They claimed that it was approximately the size of an elephant and was at least 30 feet long. The tribes informed that it was vegetarian, but it would kill humans if they got too close.
In 1980, cryptozoologist Roy Mackel and herpetologist James Powell showed pictures of local animals to the tribes, and they identified them correctly. However, on showing them the picture of a giant sauropod, they called it as mokele-mbembe. New expeditions are still on to locate the dinosaurs.
10 – Spring-Heeled Jack
This beast made his debut in the 19th century and is said to have attacked the victims with dreadful scratches. The attacks began in 1837 in southwest London. Polly Adams, a pub worker, alleged that the creature attacked one of the three women.
Witnesses describe the beast as man-like with a hideous face, sharp iron-like fingernails, tall, thin and sturdy with glowing eyes. The creature is said to have the ability to spit blue flames from his mouth, and it apparently wore a dark cloak over a tight-fitting white oilskin suit. Some claimed that it wore a helmet of some kind and had the ability to jump to heights and distances.
The attacks continued till early 1838. Lord Mayor of London was compelled to declare the beast as a public nuisance, and a group of people tried to capture the monster but with little success.
Rumors of the sightings continued until the 1850s, 60s and the 70s. Spring-Heeled Jacked has never killed any person except 18-year-old Lucy Scales who was blinded temporarily because of the blue flames from Jack’s mouth. Who or what was Spring-Heeled Jack? Chances are we will never know, and he will remain one of the most mysterious creatures of modern times.
