In Buddhism, for example, the existence of advanced powers is readily acknowledged; in fact, Buddha expected his disciples to be able to attain these abilities, but also to not become distracted by them.
Harvard Professor of Medicine, Herbert Benson and his team of researchers studied monks, residing in the Himalayan Mountains. It was not less than fascination mingled with surprise when they observed:
• The monks were able to raise the temperature of their fingers and toes by 17 degrees by a yoga technique g Tum-mo! Like really!
• Meditators in Sikkim, India have the capacity to lower their metabolic rate by 64 percent.
• The monks drying cold, wet sheets with body heat is more than enough to blow one’s mind. It is totally startling. The video pertaining to the same was made by the Harvard Research Team.
• Monks spending winter nights 15,000 feet high in the Himalayas. It is strikingly astonishing!
The above references and the witnessed, instigate of one aspect for sure, it is the advanced powers portrayed by the monks and the Buddhists.
Now, In Buddhism the existence of advanced power is approved by many scientists. Buddha expected his pupils and disciples to be able to attain these abilities. However, in accordance with him and the teachings, it was also imperative that they did not get distracted by the same.
In the same context, Donald Lopez Jr. a Professor of Buddhist and Tibetan Studies at the University of Michigan has stated about the mental abilities of Buddha in here:
“With this enlightenment, he was believed to possess all manner of supernormal powers, including full knowledge of each of his own past lives and those of other beings, the ability to know others’ thoughts, the ability to create doubles of himself, the ability to rise into the air and simultaneously shoot fire and water from his body. . . . Although he passed into nirvana at the age of eighty-one, he could have lived “for an aeon or until the end of the aeon” if only he had been asked to do so.”
There have been techniques known as siddhis which enable the humans to gain extraordinary powers.
Other than the statements, there have been stories and lore which bespeak about the credibility and the ancient teachings associated. These folklores have immense significance in the epics and ancient scriptures.
Considering that science as of today is throwing light on the possible truths.
Max Planck the theoretical physicist, the originator of quantum theory has stated that the consciousness was fundamental. He also regarded matter to be derivative from consciousness. He strongly said that everything peoples talk about or even that people regard as existing postulate consciousness.
In fact, in the above notion, it will be worth to quote Dalai Lama, when he supported the viewpoint of Max Planck:
“Broadly speaking, although there are some differences, I think Buddhist philosophy and Quantum Mechanics can shake hands on their view of the world. We can see in these great examples the fruits of human thinking. Regardless of the admiration we feel for these great thinkers, we should not lose sight of the fact that they were human beings just as we are.”
Immense mystical aspects still remain to be witnessed which will continue to allure the human race!
