From the earliest of times, the zodiac has been universally used to predict or reflect characteristics of personality, whether from the Chinese, Mesopotamian, Indus Valley, Egyptian or any other culture, echoing the ancient philosophy ‘As above – so below‘… what we today call astrology.
The origins of the zodiac
The Babylonians were the first people to systematically apply myths to constellations and astrology and describe the twelve signs of the zodiac in around 3000 BC. The Egyptians followed shortly after by refining the Babylonian system of astrology, but it was the Greeks who shaped it into its modern form.
How the zodiac signs actually influence our personalities?
In order to analyze if they mean anything, we need to understand the astrology behind zodiac signs and how they came to be. Stars exist in many different sizes and are allocated in many different regions, called constellations. When you connect all the stars within a constellation, the stars appear to make the shapes of different animals and objects. There are approximately 88 constellations, but the sun only passes through 12 constellations. The sun forms a circle once a year, called Ecliptic, and the Ecliptic is made up of 12 portions that are equal to 30 degrees each. These 12 portions are split up into different time periods, which correspond to our birthdays. Therefore, our birthdays are used to determine which zodiac sign we belong to. Each zodiac sign has its own set of unique traits and talents. For example, Aeries are supposed to be energetic and brave, while Taurus are said to be romantic and patient.
Basically, the zodiac signs show different forms of energy. If people were subjected to the full power of the Sun we all would be annihilated. Humans are therefore presented with 12 different variations over a 12 month period. Those born during those periods are learning to use that particular form of energy to become personally creative and empower the natural talents.
Wearing astrological signs
Since ancient times, men and women have been wearing their astrological signs as jewellery for good luck, protection and empowerment. Jewellery can be meaningful and is so much more fun to wear when it is believed to resonate with the personalty or empower individuals in some way.
Over time, zodiac signs have been used to empower as well as decorate the wearer.
