The so called fountain of youth has been found on the island around 50 years ago, the drug that might contain such power is called – rapamycin, a bacterial product hiding in the famous statues on the island. The most incredible feature of this element is the ability to increase the lifespan or improve conditions that cause aging.
These capabilities have been demonstrated on number of organisms, beginning from flies, mice to dogs and ever humans. But there is one but, of course, researchers admit that the long term usage of the drug might cost a price. For example the constant use of the drug might suppress the immune system and make the patients very vulnerable to bacteria and viruses. Moreover it can even cause cancer, so before usage by human beings it should be modified.
The study of 2009 has shown that mice taking the drug had to live nine months longer than those who didn’t take, and it worked both for male and female. Later on it has been tested on marmosets and even humans. Some positive results have been definitely reached, like showing improvement in aging process, improving learning and cognitive functions of humans.
The most recent researches were done on dogs by the University of Washington, and the results were astonishing, as dogs showed improvement in heart functionality after few weeks only.
But no matter how many successful tests have been completed, scientists still warn, that it is not safe to take it by humans on a regular basis, and they are still working on the way to make it serve the main goal: to treat the diseases and slow down the aging process. But there is an opportunity, and researchers are working on it!
