The zoo announced that Kokomo, an endangered western lowland gorilla, gave birth to a daughter on October 18th.
Kokomo was holding a baby while a public started to gather around to have a look and maybe make a picture as well. Animal care staff won’t have contact with a newborn until it gets older, however the weight of the newborn is already between 3.5 and 4.5 pounds. The workers also admit that the mother is very caring and protective of her baby. Mother allows the other members of the troop to have a look at the newborn, but visitors should be aware, that the new baby will always be held by the mother. So it is going to be quite difficult to see it in the arms of 229 pound mom. This is already the second baby from mother Kokomo and father Winston, however father doesn’t play a great role in taking care of the baby at this particular moment, but he keeps an eye on the whole troop instead, consisting of 8 gorillas.
