History is always interesting as it comprises of some mysteries that are solved and some, which are still unsolved. In India, generations of scientists and researchers have grappled with many puzzling stories that have perplexed them over the years. They have managed to solve some of these, however, some of the fascinating mysteries still remain unsolved.

Here is the list of 14 unsolved mysteries of India that still baffle the researchers.

Indus Valley civilisation was apparently larger than the Egyptian and Mesopotamian civilisations combined. But, the disappearance of the sites of Indus Valley civilisation happened supposedly at the same time, but no one knows exactly why and how the sudden decline of this ancient civilisation happened and the creators of the 4000 year old Indus pictographic script are yet to be discovered.

In caves near the town of Charama in the tribal Bastar region of Chhattisgarh, the archaeologist JR Bhagat, discovered some puzzling ancient rock paintings that depict eerie humanoids with no facial features and other paintings of flying discs. Surprisingly the near by villages have legends of people coming from the sky and kidnapping one or two villagers.

The Son Bhandar cave (translating to ‘store of gold’) of Rajgir in Bihar, hollowed out of a single rock, is believed to be the doorway to the riches of Bimbisara; a Magadhan king who loved hoarding treasures. The Sankhlipi script found etched on the wall of the western cave, are purportedly the clues to open the doorway. The British once tried to cannonball their way through the supposed doorway, but left without success.

The mysterious 9 unknown men in India were thought to be the world’s most powerful secret societies in the world. Apparently,  it was founded by Emperor Asoka himself, in 273 BC, in which, each of these 9 unknown men had been entrusted with a book of knowledge on different subjects such as time travel, microbiology, etc. This mysterious secret society apparently exists till date.

5 – Mir Osman Ali’s Treasure Trove

The richest man in the world in 1937, according to Time Magazine, Mir Osman Ali Khan was the last and seventh Nizam of the Asaf Jah dynasty of Hyderabad. His fabulous personal wealth and most of the famed Nizam jewellery, which were never found after his death, are believed to be somewhere in the underground chambers of King Kothi Palace in Hyderabad where the Nizam lived.

A fascinating example of the self mummification, the 500 year old mummy of 15th-century Buddhist monk named Sangha Tenzin, is still there in the Spiti Valley of Himalayas. It is apparently protected by just a thin sheet of glass in a tiny single-room concrete structure.

7 – The Royal Treasure Of Jaigarh Fort

Jaigarh Fort is not only home to a number of mysteries but also the largest cannon on wheels in the world. The researchers claim that while returning from a successful campaign in Afghanistan, Akbar’s defence minister – Man Singh,  hid the spoils of war in Jaigarh Fort. Prime Minister Indira Gandhi launched a thorough search of the fort on a tip-off that the water tanks hid the Mughal treasure in 1977, but found nothing.

One of the important leaders of the 1857 revolt, Nana Saheb, disappeared soon after his defeat at the hands of the British. Nothing is known about him or his fabled treasure, till now. Some theories claim that he ran away with part of his treasure to Nepal but no substantial proofs have been found.

A prosperous town of Paliwal Brahmins a few hundred years ago, Kuldhara, located 20 km to the west of Jaisalmer, turned to a ghost village on one fatal night, when all its 1500 residents left the village without a trace. According to legend, they left the village to escape from the evil ruler Salim Singh and his unjust taxes, also leaving a curse that anyone who tried to stay in the village will die a brutal death and, till date, Kuldhara remains uninhabited.

The enigmatic distribution of chapattis throughout the country, still remains a mystery. Some researchers claim that it may have been an attempt to deliver food to people afflicted with cholera, however, the evidence is not substantial about the actual purpose of the Chapatti Movement.

Barely two years after his taking over as the Prime Minister of India, his sudden demise took place in Tashkent in 1966. Dark blue spots and cut marks on his body at the time of death raised doubts no post-mortem was ever conducted and it was said that he died due to a cardiac arrest.

Living about 200 kilometers from Ahmedabad, in a place called Ambaji, Prahlad Jani, popularly known as Chunriwala Matajiclaims that he was blessed by the goddess Ambaji, who gave him the superhuman strength through an elixir, which drops through a hole in his palate. He claims to have gone without food and water since 1940 but no medical investigation succeeded to understand his powers.
